As a child, I spent a great deal of time at the beach, imitating the seagulls as they darted back and forth along the sand, trying to dodge the incoming water. With each passing summer, I spent less time imitating the birds and more time enticed by the force and power of the ocean. I was hypnotized by the waves as they broke along the shore, settled in a foamy-form, and rolled back out to sea. It was not long before I found pleasure in running into the water and allowing the waves to crash over me, pummeling me to the floor. Often times, I would come up gasping for air, causing my mother to have minor heart attacks while she observed from the shore. Adrenaline filled me each time I was knocked over. There was something invigorating about not knowing whether I could overcome the wave or if the water would overpower me.
It was not until the first time I got stuck in a riptide that I became truly aware of the ocean’s power. ... being in love with someone and being incapable of turning that love off, even when they no longer deserve your affection or attention. Both love and pain demand to be felt, which is why in many ways, they are one in the same. With great love comes great pain; the pain we feel most deeply comes from, or is caused by, the things we love the most. I approach love in the same way I approach the ocean waves: with both fear and fervor.
To love and be loved is one of the greatest phenomena a human being can experience. People must not be discouraged by past experiences and realize that whether welcomed or not, love is going to find its way into each person’s life. After all, love, as well as pain, is like the ocean. They are inescapable emotions, rolling into our lives like waves. Despite our knowledge of their existence, they are still capable of taking us by surprise.

- The photo—which my mama now held lovingly in her grasp—I hadn’t realized sat encased in an actual silver frame. When I had touched the frame to draw it close so I could take better look, a shock of static electricity pierced through me. - I had always been given a choice, I was never forced into the cage that was built around me, but if I hadn’t crawled into the cage and clipped my own wings, then I would have had to clip the wings of my daughter. I remember the first time I plucked a feather from imaginary wings that give freedom to youth to fly away from home; I was around twelve and wanted to go swimming in the river with a group of friends. Look at the earth (I think you might need a comma here) it seems to be shaking, littered with black dust only to catch a glimpse of the (instead of saying “of the” maybe try “a”) sea of tiny swallows feasting upon the leftover seeds....   [tags: Grandparent, Family, Cougar, Life]
